• Ironsmelting

Ironsmelting.net is a portal for those interested in ancient finds of iron production in the Near East, and the archaeology and archaeometallurgy that are related to such finds.

The site features a flash entry page and topmenu, and is driven by a handcrafted Php/MySQL database and a custom-built Content Management System (CMS).
  • Chinese Heritage and Archaeology

UCL's International Centre for Chinese Heritage and Archaeology wanted a bilingual website, with the option to enter all variants of Chinese (e.g. Simple, Taiwanese), and have them displayed correctly.

Within the tight reigns of the UCL design template, the site runs a bespoke Php/MySQL driven CMS.

At CaoutchouC we are proud of our very personal approach to the web. We build what you want, using innovative ideas and techniques, and embed this in a design that is wholely yours. As such, your website(s) will be part of, or even lead, the (re-)branding of your enterprise.

Creativity is at the heart of everything we do at CaoutchouC and we passionately believe in creating engaging design that allows consumers to interact in meaningful ways. We possess the technical grounding and understanding of what makes effective design along with the experience to create a purposeful look that works in the digital world.
Effective web design is both about communicating a client’s purpose and ensuring that the target audience is reached. All our design solutions are easy to understand and intuitive, our user-centric design ethos means that all our creative is centred around the end user. Our work doesn’t just look good - it will work hard for you and your audience.

We believe that User Experience Design is about both usability and sparkle, all great websites have both. CaoutchouC aims to provide smooth overall usability and to avoid excessive features or gimmicks through wireframe prototyping.
All CaoutchouC websites are built for accessibility, ensuring compliance with W3C guidelines and best practices, and proper rendering in most if not all browsers. Of course we keep a close watch over compatibility and useability with new platforms such as iPhone and iPad.

We are fluent in IT speak, but that doesn’t mean we’ll confuse you with jargon. We will give you straightforward advice and guidance on your project every step of the way. Using the very latest web 2.0 technologies we develop applications and tools that allow us to efficiently create rich user experiences. From Flash to PHP/MySQL to Drupal CMS integration and templates, we’ll work with you to choose the correct development platform which will provide future proof, scalable answers to your commercial question.
Of course we offer a wide range of possibilitites for you to maintain the content of your website yourself. CaoutchouC champions various Open Source Content Management Systems (CMS), e.g. Drupal, Silva, Silverstripe, Joomla, Wordpress, and will embded these in your bespoke site design. Alternatively, you could opt to use a made to measure version of the CaoutchouC CMS. This last offers you exact control over content per page of the site, and allows the use of relational databases and thus the interlinking of different data.
As web professionals with considerable experience of web standards, accessibility and usability, we care deeply that every website we produce is built responsibly and can be used by everyone. We have made every effort to ensure that our own website meets our own criteria, current best-practice, and relevant legislation. Below we detail some of the most important considerations.

If you do have any feedback, questions, corrections, perhaps want to congratulate us or maybe have a good moan, then please contact us via design@caoutchouc.co.uk.

Standards compliance

All pages on this site aim to validate as XHTML 1.0 Strict. The validation program can determine with 100% accuracy whether a page is valid XHTML. There are still elements we may purposely use that will make certain pages fail. CaoutchouC use common sense wherever possible.

All pages on this site also aim to be Section 508 approved, complying with the U.S. Federal Government Section 508 Guidelines.

CaoutchouC believe that 100% of all website information should be accessible regardless of the browser used. We have built this website using current web standards to meet this criteria. We, like many others, support standards-compliant browsers as a priority, but make use of progressive enhancement to ensure delivery of information to all browsers.

CaoutchouC believe in driving web design forwards through responsible implementation and innovation. We strongly support web standards and forward-thinking web design and layout, and we actively make use of new methodologies and latest specifications.

This website makes use of layout and visual techniques made available with the CSS3 specification, and these methods are supported within Safari, Firefox v2 upwards, Opera v9 upwards, Camino (Mac) and Internet Explorer v8 beta. Users browsing with IE7 or below, Firefox 1.x, and older browsers will still be able to access all information, though the visual experience may be reduced where necessary, following progressive enhancement best-practice.

We would encourage Internet Explorer users to upgrade their copy of IE 5.5 or 6, or abandon this terrible browser altogether and use Firefox or Safari (both available for Windows).

  • All content images used in this site include descriptive ALT attributes. Purely decorative graphics include null ALT attributes.
  • All background and decorative images are created with stylesheets, and do not require ALT attributes.
  • Our web pages are designed so that the content is still legible and accessible with images turned off, or stylesheets unavailable.

Content and structure

  • This site uses cascading style sheets for visual layout, and elements of unobtrusive JavaScript for behaviour.
  • If your browser or browsing device does not support stylesheets at all, or if stylesheets are disabled, the content of each page is still readable.
  • If JavaScript is unavailable or disabled, any bahavioural functions will degrade and all content will remain accessible.
  • Most of the text on this website can be increased or decreased in size using built-in browser tools. However, to maintain appearance we recommend using a modern browser with text-zoom facilities.
